What vehicles will a rucRak fit? Not Just for Jeeps!

rucRak hitch cargo carriers are designed to fit any vehicle, RV, or camper with a standard 2" hitch receiver.

The Grunt is specially made for Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco models, and it made to give you full tailgate access with protection for your tailgate and tire carrier with our patented 2 piece design.

The Gunny is for any vehicle with a 2 in receiver, including SUV's trucks, RV's campers and motor homes. They are compatible with a wide range of adventure and daily-use vehicles from brands like Toyota, Ford, Chevy, GMC, and Jeep, Subaru — including popular models such as the 4Runner, Tacoma, Forester, F-150, and Tahoe as well as many other popular models. If you have a 2" hitch receiver, we have a rucRak model for you.

Will I gave access to my tailgate with a rucRak installed?

YES! Unlike most cargo carriers and bike racks that block access to your rear tailgate, the rucRak Grunt and Gunny models both give you 100 access to your tailgate, barn door or hatch.

How much weight can a rucRak cargo carrier hold?

rucRak systems are designed around usable, real-world capacity — not inflated static numbers. Most current rucRak configurations support 150–250 lbs of safe, usable gear, depending on the system and how it’s configured.
Watch:
The Truth About Hitch Cargo Carrier Weight Limits: Why More Isn’t Always Better

rucRak weight capacity limits are based on dynamic load behavior while driving, accounting for leverage at the hitch, stability at highway speeds, and control on uneven terrain — not static “parked” weight ratings that fail to reflect real conditions.

For customers needing higher capacity, rucRak is introducing the CHIEF, a high-durability cargo rack engineered for heavier-duty use and e-Bikes, with a 250 lb usable capacity. Like all rucRak systems, the CHIEF is designed with safety, balance, and real-world performance in mind and will be released soon.

In short, rucRak prioritizes stability, access, and confidence on the road — not chasing the biggest number on paper.

Will the rucRak block my back up camera?

In short, no. The rucRak Grunt for Wrangler and Bronco has specific provisions built in to accommodate the rear facing camera on these vehicles. While we do not yet have x-ray vision to allow you to see behind you when the rucRak is loaded, when it is unloaded or when the basket is folded up in the Home position, you retain your back up camera view.

Can rucRak carry bikes and cargo at the same time?

rucRak cargo racks are engineered and recommended to be used either as a cargo carrier or as a bike rack — not both at the same time.

When configured as a bike rack, rucRak safely supports up to two bikes.
When configured as a cargo carrier, it is designed to carry gear within its rated capacity.

For riders carrying heavier bikes, the future CHIEF system is engineered to support e-bikes, with a 250 lb rated capacity when configured appropriately as a bike rack.

Carrying cargo and two bikes simultaneously is not recommended, as doing so can exceed safe leverage and dynamic load limits while driving.

How do I access my spare with the rucRak on?

The rucRak Grunt can be removed from your spare in minutes by removing the two bolts in the cover plate and the three nuts off the studded lugs holding the rucRak to your spare. The you can remove the rucRak and access your spare as usual. It usually can be done in under 2 minutes.

Can I tow a trailer AND use my rucRak?

No, you cannot tow a trailer AND utilize the rucRak, HOWEVER, you DO NOT have to totally remove the rucRak Grunt from your spare. Fold your rucRak up, remove the load handler and install your hitch ball and trailer on! Since the rucRak only weighs 32 lbs. it will not damage your tailgate or hinges when empty. We have towed our show trailer literally hundreds of thousands of miles like this.

What vehicles work best with GUNNY vs GRUNT?

The GUNNY and GRUNT are designed for different vehicle setups. Choosing the right system depends on how your vehicle is built.

The GUNNY is ideal for SUVs, trucks, RVs, and vehicles without a rear spare. It’s a fully hitch-mounted, swing-away system that provides full rear access without unloading.

The GRUNT works on Jeeps and Broncos with rear-mounted spare tires. It uses the spare tire for structural support, combined with hitch support, to maintain rear access and balanced load distribution.

Both systems share the same modular platform — the difference is how they mount on your vehicle to deliver stability, access, and real-world usability.
