Engineered for Everyday Adventure

Transform Your
Camping Adventure

Our mission is to engineer a modular cargo carrier rack that goes beyond carrying gear—transforming to fit family trips, road trips, national parks, camping, and everyday life.

What size hitch receiver does rucRak fit?

rucRak hitch cargo carriers are designed to fit standard 2" hitch receivers, which are common on SUVs, trucks, Jeeps, RVs, and vans.

They’re compatible with a wide range of adventure and daily-use vehicles from brands like Toyota, Ford, Chevy, GMC, and Jeep — including popular models such as the 4Runner, Tacoma, Bronco, F-150, and Tahoe. To see how rucRak fits and functions on SUVs, explore our guide on how rucRak fits and functions on SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner.

Can I open my tailgate or hatch with a cargo carrier installed?

Yes. rucRak systems are designed so you can open your tailgate or rear hatch without unloading your gear.

The GUNNY uses a swing-away design that pivots clear of the vehicle, while the GRUNT combines a rear spare-mount with hitch support to maintain rear access. Both systems are engineered around real-world usability — not fixed racks that block access once they’re loaded.

That’s a key difference between rucRak and typical one-piece cargo carriers.

How much weight can a rucRak cargo carrier hold?

rucRak systems are designed around usable, real-world capacity — not inflated static numbers. Most current rucRak configurations support 125–200 lbs of safe, usable gear, depending on the system and how it’s configured.

That capacity is based on dynamic load behavior while driving, accounting for leverage at the hitch, stability at highway speeds, and control on uneven terrain — not static “parked” weight ratings that fail to reflect real conditions. For a deeper explanation of why this matters, see our guide on why hitch cargo carrier weight ratings matter.

For customers needing higher capacity, rucRak is introducing the CHIEF, a high-durability cargo rack engineered for heavier-duty use and e-Bikes, with a 250 lb usable capacity. Like all rucRak systems, the CHIEF is designed with safety, balance, and real-world performance in mind and will be released soon.

In short, rucRak prioritizes stability, access, and confidence on the road — not chasing the biggest number on paper.

Is the rucRak stable at highway speeds and off-road?

Yes. rucRak systems are engineered to remain stable at highway speeds and on uneven or off-road terrain.

Rather than relying on brochure specs alone, rucRak manages dynamic loads while driving, balancing leverage at the hitch to reduce sway, bounce, and stress on the vehicle. This design prioritizes real-world performance — the kind that shows up after thousands of miles on pavement, dirt roads, and trails.

In short, what feels stable on the road matters more than what looks good on paper, and rucRak is built around that reality.

Can rucRak carry bikes and cargo at the same time?

rucRak cargo racks are engineered and recommended to be used either as a cargo carrier or as a bike rack — not both at the same time.

When configured as a bike rack, rucRak safely supports up to two bikes.
When configured as a cargo carrier, it is designed to carry gear within its rated capacity.

For riders carrying heavier bikes, the future CHIEF system is engineered to support e-bikes, with a 250 lb rated capacity when configured appropriately as a bike rack.

Carrying cargo and two bikes simultaneously is not recommended, as doing so can exceed safe leverage and dynamic load limits while driving.

What vehicles work best with GUNNY vs GRUNT?

The GUNNY and GUNNY are designed for different vehicle setups. Choosing the right system depends on how your vehicle is built.

The GUNNY is ideal for SUVs, trucks, RVs, and vehicles without a rear spare. It’s a fully hitch-mounted, swing-away system that provides full rear access without unloading.

The GRUNT works best on Jeeps and Broncos with rear-mounted spare tires. It uses the spare tire for structural support, combined with hitch support, to maintain rear access and balanced load distribution.

Both systems share the same modular platform — the difference is how they interface with your vehicle to deliver stability, access, and real-world usability.

Is rucRak good for daily driving or just trips?

Yes — rucRak is built for daily driving, not just trips.

In addition to camping and adventure use, rucRak works just as well for groceries, sports gear, family travel, and everyday hauling. From weekday errands to road trips and trail days, the system is designed to adapt without becoming a hassle. You can see the full range of everyday and adventure scenarios in our guide to real-life modular hitch cargo carrier uses.

The modular design makes it easy to shift from daily convenience to weekend getaways without swapping systems or removing the rack. With multiple configurations and accessories, rucRak is engineered to flex with real life — as outlined in 13 things a rucRak can do.

In short, rucRak blends daily practicality with adventure-ready durability in one system — built for how people actually live and drive.
